Klebsiella africana is a Gram-negative, encapsulated, non-motile rod belonging to the family Enterobacteriaceae, first described from clinical isolates in Africa. It is closely related to Klebsiella pneumoniae and has been recovered from human infections, though its clinical significance and epidemiology are still being characterised. Genomically, K. africana is distinguished from other members of the K. pneumoniae species complex by distinct core-genome phylogenetic placement and specific accessory gene content.
